Hi Charlie,
Thanks for the post! This is a good question and one that we frequently address with our clients. Because you are entering a PhD program "for the long haul," fit and program compatibility are actually key components for your candidacy. In a shorter program, perhaps that is not quite as research-based, this would not be so critical.
However, a PhD program in bioengineering will be a tight network of people--and each PhD candidate will bring unique strengths to the table that will enrich (and expand) existing research teams. We encourage a fairly strict balance with our PhD candidates in their statements of purpose:
-Background (1-2 paragraphs)
-Goals (1-2 paragraphs)
-Program Fit (1-2 paragraphs)
Within these major buckets of course, we build out compelling story elements and find ways to anchor your goals and convey passion for your work. However, a PhD level SOP needs to really get down to business and program compatibility--perhaps more than any other type of program, you will be an ambassador for (and asset to) the university.
So, very critical to show you're ready to contribute to research from Day one. If you have any other questions, please let us know.
Best,
Brooke
